31 and Baptism # 1!

Hey Mom,

im glad that that all worked out for you with the car and with your trip and with camp. i dont know if i have time to write a letter this week but i can deffinately get one out by next week.

sounds like the sisters are on fire! go them. sisters are always good missionaries.

i would deffinately like to go to the fossil rim. that sounds fun. they have something like that out here in the mission that is supposed to be really cool.

emily says that she had alot of fun and i am glad that she did. i kinda wish that i had done that stuff (EFY) but oh well.

im also glad that you got the picture cd. i was hoping that you would have it before this week.

so this week was a good one. thats for sure. i would say that saturday was memorable to say the least. in the morning we did get to see Elder Bednar. he was just amazing. he had us study two of his talks in preperation for meeting with him. he invoked his Apostolic authority to declare that D&C 44 was written about that meeting. if you read it, it is written about the California Carlsbad mission last saturday of course among the other times that a meeting has been declared that way. he didnt just talk to us we had a training with him. he asked us what we had learned from his talks that he asked us to study. different missionaries commented on the things that we had learned from them. he would then add on to what the missionaries said. then he helped us to notice the process by which we were learning from each other and asked us what application that had to being a Preach My Gospel missionary. i dont remember what i said but i made some comment about it, and so did Elder Gibbons and Elder Haupt. Elder Haupt said something about service to your companion and investigators and Elder Bednar told him to remember what he had said and that if he did he would be a catch as a future husband.

he then opened up to questions and told us that we should take advantage of the opportunity to make the question time good because we would never have the opportunity again to ask an Apostle questions in a forum so small. my favorite question that he answered was "what is the most important thing that you have learned about Jesus Christ as an Apostle?" he said that the most important thing was about how individually Christ cares for his children. he said that Christ's ministry was one by one. Elder Bednar says that his ministry has been the same way. he cited an example from when he was newly ordained from when he went to a mission president conference in the northeast. as part of it they went to the sacred grove where Elder Bednar met a 14 year old boy praying about an upcoming surgery. Elder Bednar says that he was sent there to meet that boy, and oh yeah, we had a mission president's conference.

it makes me think of our testimony meeting with truman madsen and those other men and how it seemed like coincedence. but i know it wasnt. it made me feel a strong confirmation that Joseph Smith, a Prophet of God had been martyred there in the early 1800's. i really enjoyed meeting Elder Bednar. he went overtime about 3 hours so we got back to our area just in time for the baptism.

it was a really powerful event. lots of small things were funny. this ward has in large measure forgotten how to do a convert baptism in the 17 months since the last one but i plan to get them back into practice. so there were some hitches but it all worked out. the Spirit was very strong as Paige went into the water. it is true that in Priesthood ordinances the power of Godliness is manifest.

chris er** is still on for saturday morning this week. pray for him, he is overcoming a lot of challenges to make it happen.

we are going to make this area one that baptizes often. Elder Bednar invoked his Apostolic authority to pour out an increased measure of the Spirit in this mission and i can feel it. we set several appointments yesterday with people we met and E Gibbons and i are doing some powerful teaching. the investigators are doing well. dan, the one who is like megan from foothill read the book of 1 Nephi last night and says that he will have 2 Nephi read by tonight. i dont know that he recognizes it but he is starting to feel the power and Spirit of the Book of Mormon. hope you guys have a great week!

Wow, these weeks are going by fast. I'm sure it seems that way for you too since you are so busy. It sounds like you and your companion are on the way to really shaping up the area when it comes to missionary work. Congrats on your first baptism. One thing that converts have that is nice is that they can actually remember their baptisms in detail where most 8 year olds have a hard time.

We are having fun with your Mom. She's probably told you about all that we have been doing. It's a great time of the year--celebrating the 4th of July. There are a lot of activities and we're trying to take them all in. I really am proud to live in this free land where we can do so much. After your mission, this country will allow you to do anything you really want in the way of accomplishments--including more missionary work.

Everyone always asks about you. Grandpa and Charlotte do not know how to use the internet and my dad forgets how to get to your blog. So I have to help him out. He doesn't know how to sign in and comment either. But they are all interested and very pleased that you are doing well.

Well, it's after 1 am so I better get to bed but just wanted to say hello, wish you a great week and tell you how much I love you. You are a great grandson! Take care and go get 'em! Grandma Sue
